World Down Syndrome Day

March 21, 2021

Today marks the 3rd year this day holds great IMPORTANCE for our family.

When our delightful granddaughter Ivy Grace was born with Trisomy 21 I had only a very vague awareness of Down Syndrome, let alone any real understanding.

When her parents informed us of their prenatal diagnosis, my instant (and lasting) thought was “This little girl is going to make our entire family better people.”    And she truly has!!

Ivy instills compassion and joy wherever she goes, and in everything she does.  Her abilities are endless…..some will just take a bit longer.

The village of Love & Support that surrounds Ivy and her family is enormous and constantly growing. The presence of Social Media allows the inclusion of an online support system, which has proven especially invaluable to Ivy’s parents. As true Empathy can only come from shared experience.

Local support comes from the Manitoba Down Syndrome Society (MDSS). Sadly, the pandemic has forced them to cancel all their fantastic social interaction programs. Fingers crossed that by September you will see “Ivy’s Vines” at the MDSS Walk With Us 2021 fundraiser.

The current struggle remains to get her Occupational & Physio Therapies back to in-person (outdoor) appointments!!   Here is a sampling of things my grandchildren are currently permitted:  dinner on a patio / attend daycare or school / play outdoor sports / visit a playground / etc… While the Therapy some children and adults desperately need is restricted to Zoom. WTH?

  1. Ivy is so lucky to have you as her abuela. One of the strongest of her vines you will be cheerleading her every step of the way. Please keep these Ivy Grace updates coming as she grows. I, for one, appreciate the education and joy she can pass on through you and also shows us that style isn’t always about clothes or home decor it’s also about how we treat others around us. Besos y abrazos siempre.
