Scarves….
From the beginning of October till mid April, every (naturally well-dressed) Man, Woman, and Child in Madrid will be wearing one.
After the heat of summer, they start off as a simple decoration worn with a light sweater, and quickly become the most needed item in anyone’s wardrobe.
I recall the first time I did not wear a scarf … my cashmere turtleneck did not need it, And it was 12 degrees outside! Nonetheless, a few people exclaimed “Cover your Neck, you’ll catch a cold!”
There also seems to be a Rule, that during winter, (December – March) elderly ladies wear full length mink coats. Regardless of the temperatures. But ‘Seasonal Jackets’ are a whole other story…
During one of my summer visits, my MotherinLaw graciously offered me some of her scarves. We had such an enjoyable time going through them together. Some had not been worn, or seen in decades. For me it was like ‘Christmas in July’.
Yes, I know, I have too many. But seeing as they serve a dual purpose, I am not concerned about it. What is troubling though, is how to display them?
Currently, they are in a drawer. They start out all neatly pressed and folded, but within a few weeks the drawer becomes quite unruly.
In my previous PDR they lived on a wire mannequin, but she has gone onto something far more fabulous in our new space…
Another issue with them being in a (much larger now) drawer , ‘I do not wear, what I can not see’.
Love this post! I too have amassed (and carted back with me to Oz) an abundance of scarves, pashminas, odd fluffy neck warmers… and am now left with a storage dilemma. I’m determined to wear them, however. When the weather cools down I’ll give everyone a taste of European style!
