Bras and Washing Machines

October 22, 2018

I have always been an advocate of handwashing my delicates.  Then we moved to Madrid….

Summer temperatures here hover in the high 30s, and even into the 40s.  With all this perspiration, my diligent hand washing was just NOT getting my bras totally clean.

While I have heard first hand, the horrors of underwires bringing washing machines to a complete halt, I had to try something!  After all, I have paid far too much money for my bras to let them become dingy.

I realized that even a gentle cycle might be a bit much on my ‘French lace’…perhaps shortening their lifespan,  but at the same time, its not like they are going to be family heirlooms!

So here is how I did it: I placed each bra into an individual mesh bag, then all the mesh bags into a pillow case – which I tied very tightly with an elastic.  Baby Shampoo / No fabric softener (as I felt it may ‘plug up’ the lace) / Warm water / and used the cycle labelled ‘hand wash’.  (I should point out my machine is front loading, and therefore has no agitator).

They came out amazingly clean, and totally intact!    I then laid them flat to air dry,  before putting them back in my dresser.

Bras with the straps securely hooked, are freshly laundered.  The ones that are unfastened, have been worn once or twice (taking care to air them out before placing back in the drawer).
